Electric vehicles are becoming cheaper and therefore, much more accessible to the general public. There are many benefits that come with electric vehicles as they are a great deal cheaper to run in comparison to your average petrol or diesel car as well as having less of a negative impact on the environment. Due to this increased popularity, there are many electric vehicle owners who require a charging point at their home. This is where our team at Shire Electrical Ltd are able to provide you with an efficient service, enabling you to charge your electric vehicle up outside of your property.
There are many reasons why having a charge point outside your home is extremely beneficial. The average electric vehicle driver does 80 per cent of their charging at home. The most common reason being the convenience of plugging your car in to charge at night whilst you sleep, so it is ready to go in the morning. As well as this, having your own charge point at home allows you to have faster-charging speeds and additional built-in safety features.
There are three types of charge rates:
Slow charging (up to 3kW)
Using a slow charge point, most models will take as long as 12 hours to charge; however, they will usually be full in between 6-8 hours. Nearly all-electric models can be slow charged at this rate and tend to be found at the homes of electric car owners or at the workplace. The slow chargers are unsuitable for public use as the chargers in public are often fast or rapid charging rates.
Fast Charging (7-22kW)
Using a fast charge point, most models will be fully charged in 3-4 hours. Not all vehicles accept a fast charge; however, most can be connected to them to draw fewer amps. Most commercial charge points use this method.
Rapid charging (45-50kW)
Using a rapid charge point, most models will be fully charged in anything up to 1 hour. This rate of charge is found in commercial, public places rather than being used at domestic properties.
At Shire Electrical Ltd, we work with our customers before we do the installation to ensure everything is prepared correctly to prevent any problems. Before the installation, we will look at the outside of your property and your existing electrical system (fuse box). We do this to assess the area and to assist you in choosing the best position for your charger to be placed. During the installation, we attach the charge point to your wall by drilling fixings and clipping the cable to the wall. We then ask you to turn your electricity off for a short time whilst we install your charge point to connect it to the mains supply. Once this is all done, our team are then happy to give you a full demonstration, ensuring you know how to manage it once we have left. Before we pack up and finish, our team conduct a final safety test. At Shire Electrical Ltd, safety is our number one priority, and you can be sure that from start to finish, throughout all installations, we adhere to all health and safety regulations.
